Stu Ungar is thought to be by most to the finest NL Holdem Poker gambler ever.
The 3 time World Poker Champion was born in New York in 1953 and started playing poker before becomming a teenager.
The young gambler began betting gin and at the age of 10 had won his first gin tournament, while on vacation with his parents. By the time he turned 14 the little poker genius had become a pro and stopped going to school.
In 1954 Stu Ungar entered the record books by succeeding $10,000 in a gin rummy tournament without dropping a single hand, a record which still remains in New York these days.
The quick speaking wiz kid has been likened, in poker terms, to athletic superstars such as Joe Namath and Tiger Woods. Stu had a true talent for betting poker except regardless of his achievements in Texas hold’em poker, he favored playing gin.
Stu once said that there might a few day be a better No Limit Texas holdem player than him except he could not see how anyone could ever be a much better gin gambler.
In ‘80 Stu was put on the world map as one of the ideal Holdem Poker gamblers in the entire world when he was crowned World Poker Champ for the very first time. Extraordinarily it was the 1st time he had played in the tournament.
The following year he dismissed any thoughts that it had been luck, by effectively protecting his title. And in ‘97 Stu set the record by succeeding his third World poker championship.
Except this poker master also battled with drug abuse and a year after winning his 3rd title Stu died in his hotel room. According to medical doctors, he had died from a cardiac event which was brought on by his lifestyle.
Stu Ungar had started with nothing except his skill and talent for the game which made this poker excellent a millionaire numerous times over.
