In Advance of a Tilt

Ah, the poker steam. If a poker enthusiast claims never to have stared faced down the barrel of a looming steam – they are either lying or they haven’t been playing long enough. This does not mean obviously that everyone has been on tilt before, a few people have wonderful control and carry their losses as a hit and keep it at that. To be a good poker player, it is especially crucial to appraise your successes and your losses in the same way – with no emotion. You compete in the game the same way you did following a tough beat like you would after winning a huge hand. All poker pros are not enticed by tilting after a horrible beat as they are very professional and you must be to.

You need to understand that you can’t win every hand you are in, regardless if you are the strongest player. Hands that typically cause people go on tilt are hands you were the favorite or at least thought you were up until you were hit and you squandered a large chunk of your bankroll. Bad beats are bound to develop. Accept that idea right now, I’ll say it again – if your brother enjoys cards, if your mother enjoys cards, if your grandparents play cards – They have all had bad defeats sometime. It’s an unavoidable outcome of competing in Texas Holdem, or really any kind of poker.

After all we are assumingly (nearly all of us) in the game for a single reason – to earn a profit, it would make sense that we would play accordingly to maximize our profit potential. Now let’s say you are up one hundred dollars off of a $100 deposit, and you suffer a huge blow in a NL game and your bankroll is at one hundred and twenty dollars. You have burned $80 in a round where you should have picked up $200two hundred dollars when you decided to go all-in on the flop and held a 10 – 1 advantage. And that guy! He sucked you out on the river? – Well stop right there. This is a classic choice for a new bettor to begin tilting. They basically blew too much cash on one hand that they really should have won and they are aggravated
