Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he loved gambling on numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting really aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a bit and moved to New York City to participate in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he would play countless hours and lose a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus attention more on poker.

The real improvement in his skills happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would often wager against each other. Howard was able to access some of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would tweak his strategic thinking abilities. Howard used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.

Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the greatest women players the poker world ever. Howard relocated to Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
