by Jordyn on August 2nd, 2021
Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker competitor on the globe by many of the top pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather introduced him to one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was addicted to poker and wished to discover every little thing he could about the game. Phil would tell his parents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. He didn’t allow the adverse feedback from others kill his goal of becoming one of the strongest poker players on the planet.
He started competing seriously after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his techniques at the casinos of Atlantic City. The first number of years for him were a learning experience and coming away with a win was not a common thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made 2 final tables and came away with his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the final table he destroyed many of the better known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to hard work and a continuing passion for poker. Phil states that he’s learning every single day and is incredibly humble about his success. He knows he makes blunders every single session of poker and constantly aspires to get better.
Although Ivey has won some large tournaments, he likes destroying cash games on a normal basis.
