Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha hi/low starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting happens. After all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants get flustered. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same concept in nearly all poker games.

A lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem complex at first, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the base subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an exciting array of betting options and owing to the fact that you have many individuals shooting for the high hand, and many battling for the low. If you enjoy a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi low.
