Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha/8 begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting follows in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of wagering happens. After all the players have either called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some players get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical concept in nearly all poker games.

The low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem complicated at first, after a few rounds you will be able to get the base subtleties of play simply enough.
