Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed playing numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting really competitive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York City to compete in some serious chess. He made some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He believed he possibly could better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to get more rest and concentrate even more on poker.

The definite advancement in his skills began when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would regularly play against each other. Howard had access into several of the foremost minds in chess. He also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was a superb student of the game as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the best female players the poker arena today. Howard relocated to Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the following decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
